FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Birmingham, Ala., August 18, 2005 - Golden & Associates Construction will begin construction this month on a $325,000 skate park addition to Alabaster's Veterans Park. The Shelby County Commission partnered with the City of Alabaster to fund this new +/- 1 acre recreational facility to give the community a place where skaters can go to skate and perform tricks in a safe environment.
Skate parks are not new to the Birmingham area, but this one will be unique in the fact that it will have a concrete in-ground bowl for skaters to use. The skate bowl, similar to an in-ground pool, is shaped like a skull to give the skaters a variety of hills and valleys to skate. There will also be a "street area" that will have ledges, rails and stairs for the skaters to jump and perform stunts and tricks. The project is slated to be complete in mid-October.
The City of Alabaster and Shelby County put much effort into the research for developing the project. A focus group led by Larry Vann, Alabaster's Park and Recreation Director, interviewed local skaters to find out what they would like in a park. Shelby County hired Site Design Group, Inc., an expert skate park design firm from Arizona, to take these ideas and design the project according to what local skaters wanted. The closest park similar to the one that will be built is in Huntsville. Shelby County Landscape Architect Jim Phillips stated, "This park will be different and unique to the area…this recreational facility will be a great addition to the Alabaster recreational system."
