Gravlee Fitness Center

Gravlee Fitness Center is a unique, one-on-one health club catering to Mountain Brook area residents. The single story, 2,500 sq. ft. new commercial building encompasses 18 feet tall, stick framed, perimeter walls and a mezzanine for the owner's office. Rough sawn lumber, high open trusses and woodwork details provides the framework for the unique, lofty interior while the exterior finish in soft, red brick conforms to the traditional neighborhood character of Mountain Brook's Crestline Village. To create a feeling of openness, four exterior glass roll-up doors were added and are opened on weather permitting days. Salvaged heart pine timbers from a North Carolina warehouse built in the 1890s form the exposed load bearing columns and beams. The ceilings are painted bead board in the gym area, and the bathrooms include tiled showers and stained concrete floors.

Being in the heart of Crestline Village, the owner's wanted to create a business that would welcome area joggers and pedestrians. A water fountain, made from a salvaged sink, landscaping and resting deck were added as welcoming gestures.

Working with the owner's tight budget, Golden & Associates created almost $100,000 in value for the owner without compromising the architect's overall design and the owner's expectations or needs. The timeframe for the project was six months.
