The Junior League of Birmingham
Hugh Kaul Children's Zoo
This project includes a commons building, carousel, replica of Red Mountain, an Alabama stream exhibit, and an old-fashioned mortise and tenon barn.
The various areas of the Children's Zoo were constructed simultaneously to ensure the 6-month project schedule was met.
The commons building and carousel are situated atop driven steel piles and the barn rests upon 3,600 tons of compacted stone. The commons building includes dining facilities, a gift shop, restrooms, and an educational space.
The replica of Red Mountain and simulated tree trunk were constructed using shotcrete and were hand carved. The old-fashioned barn was constructed using pegs instead of nails. The fountains re-circulate water through a series of 60 underground pipes.
