Alabama Veterans' Memorial

Alabama Veterans' Memorial consisted of architectural landscaping, site work, and asphalt paving over a four acre area in Birmingham, Alabama. The architectural landscaping includes 325 linear feet of keystone retaining wall and 200 linear feet of 1-foot thick cast-in-place concrete retaining wall. The concrete walls have an architectural grade finish with exposed snap-tie holes uniformly distributed. The entrance road and parking lot is constructed of a heavy-duty asphalt system, encompassing 44,000 square feet of paving. Pedestrian walkways both enclose and divide the new parking area, which consists of a unique stone system. The diverse look of the landscaping was created by strategic placement of a variety of small trees, English ivy, and forsythia. Cresting the keystone retaining wall along the entrance drive is 300 linear feet of rustic guardrail system. The highlight of the parking area is the highly visible Alabama state flag, which has been strategically placed in a centrally located landscape island. The project's duration was six months and was completed prior to the park's Memorial Day inauguration.
