YWCA Interfaith Hospitality House

The YWCA Central Alabama, a non-profit organization with a 106 year history of serving women and their families in a three-county area is in the midst of a $9 million multi-phased urban neighborhood revitalization effort known as “ywoodlawn” within an impoverished and under-served area of Birmingham, Alabama.

The Interfaith Hospitality House (IHH) is the first phase of this venture. IHH is housing for families experiencing home¬lessness – two-parent families, single mothers with adolescent sons and fathers with children. This is one of the very, very few shelters that will accept adolescent sons and fathers with children.

The YWCA Interfaith Hospitality House project consists of two separate buildings totaling 9,000SF. One building houses 7 residential suites, and the other houses the common areas (living room, dining room, kitchen, etc) and administrative offices. The buildings are connected by a breezeway. Features include wood framed construction with a masonry and stucco veneer, a metal roof, custom mahogany exterior doors, exposed rafter ceilings, a commercial kitchen, and orna¬mental site fencing.

Golden & Associates was awarded this project through the hard bid process in late 2008. The contracted schedule was for 330 days. Because of accurate scheduling, Golden & Associates was able to complete the project 2 months ahead of schedule despite over 50 days of rain delays.
