AC Legg Lofts
Once the home for the A.C. Legg Spice Company, A.C. Legg Lofts is now seventeen luxurious, loft style condominiums. The historic building was renovated while retaining original features of the structure first built in the early 1900s. Each loft has high ceilings with the original exposed rough sawn beams. The original maple hardwood floors were brought back to life after years of spice residue covered their beauty. The bathrooms and kitchens feature custom stained concrete countertops. The lofts are designed to be wide open with only partition walls to enclose the bathrooms, laundry room, and closets. Each unit has track lighting and exposed galvanized spiral ductwork that run the entire length of each unit. These items, along with the existing masonry walls, give each loft the feeling of living in a historical downtown building.
The buildout of the building included removing and replacing existing elevators and stairwells and transforming the building's basement into an underground parking garage. The existing roof was completely demolished and replaced with a rubber membrane roofing system. New brick, solid mahogany doors and new windows were added to the front façade to revitalize the building's appearance from the sidewalk.
Located in the Loft District of downtown Birmingham, the location posed several problems that had to be carefully thought out during the construction schedule process. The limited space made the coordination and scheduling of material deliveries vital to the success of the project.
