University of Alabama Bibb Graves Hall
Built in 1929, Bibb Graves Hall was dedicated and named after former Alabama Governor Bibb Graves and was originally constructed for the University’s College of Education. Today, the 78 year-old building houses classrooms, science and computer laboratories, and faculty offices.
This 65,000 sq. ft. renovation began with the abatement and demolition of interior walls, ceilings, and mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems. New fire protection systems as well as updated MEP systems were added. New floors, drywall, and ceilings were then installed and finished.
The interior renovation included restoring the building’s rotunda to its original beauty. This entailed refreshing the dome plaster ceiling and walls with new paint, refurbishing the brass chandelier, restoring the terrazzo flooring, and refinishing the ornate stair railing.
For the building’s exterior, Golden & Associates removed and replaced the windows and main entrance storefront, as well as performed masonry restoration and cleaning. To top off the project, the three-story building’s rubber membrane roof was replaced.
At the end of the project, the owner requested Golden & Associates install the landscaping, which was not in the original scope of work. Golden & Associates was able to accomodate the University, and had the landscaping in place before students returned to classes in January.
This was Bibb Graves Hall’s first full renovation, and Golden & Associates Construction’s first project in Tuscaloosa.
