Five Points West Municipal Center

The Five Points West Municipal Center was a renovation and new construction project serving the public and employees of the City of Birmingham.

The first renovation transformed an existing grocery store into the new Five Points West Library. The 36,560 sq. ft. space features an inviting entrance created from attractive white architectural cast-in-place concrete walls. The library's interior includes a computer training center, meeting rooms and spacious area for adults and children to learn and read from a selection of over 60,000 books. Architectural interior accents include concrete countertops and stained concrete and microtop floors.

The second renovation transformed a vacant parking deck that once housed a pool hall and movie theater into fitness and training centers for the Birmingham Fire Department. The 5,600 sq. ft. fitness center features a workout room and locker rooms. Each locker room is equipped with a whirlpool spa and a sauna that will allow the firemen a place to relax or rehabilitate injuries. The 8,200 sq. ft. training center will be used by the B.F.D. for training and educational purposes. The exterior of the parking deck was patched and painted to revitalize the appearance of the structure.

A third building was constructed to house a refueling station. While excavating the area to install underground fuel tanks, two existing fuel tanks were found. Golden & Associates worked closely with the Alabama Department of Environmental Management to take all of the correct precautions needed during the removal of these tanks. The station includes a building to house the fueling equipment and a covered island for the fuel pumps.
