Brookwood Forest Elementary School

In an effort to keep pace with the current level of technology integration into the classroom, the Mountain Brook Board of Education relied on Golden & Associates to deliver their new Media Center and Multi-purpose Room addition. The 9,600 sq. ft. media center and 300-seat auditorium were constructed as part of Phase I of an overall facility upgrade that included renovation to 7,600 sq. ft. of space that formerly housed the library and teacher’s workrooms. The project also included conversion of a 1,850 sq. ft. stage, locker room and storage area into pre-school classrooms, a band room and coaching offices and extensive parking and carpool access improvements.

To create an environment that will foster progressive teaching and learning processes, the media center features a state-of-the-art computer lab as well as an amphitheater-style storytime area beneath a pyramid shaped skylight. With a system-wide ratio of one multi-media computer for every four students, students will no longer have to stand in line to access the high speed T-1 local area network. As part of Phase II, the old library was enhanced to provide additional space for parent/teacher conferences, testing, a staff lounge, and video editing and broadcasting functions.

Careful coordination was the key to the successful completion of the Phase I addition, which took place during the school year. All material deliveries and major activities were scheduled to work around such daily activities as carpool drop-off and pick-up and special school functions. The Phase II renovation was required to be completed during the 11-week summer break. The construction team worked closely together with the architect, principal, and state building officials to ensure the systems and components of the renovated areas were brought into compliance with today’s building standards for quality and life safety.
